National Invasive Weeds Awareness Week (Nationwide, USA) From: Barry Rice (barrymr(at)ucdavis.edu) The Invasive Weeds Awareness Coalition (IWAC) invites you to participate in a week-long series of events and activities held in Washington, D.C. during the fourth annual National Invasive Weeds Awareness Week from February 24 through February 28, 2003. This big event will include several hosted meetings with coalition member agencies and Departments (Interior and Agriculture), briefings on critical invasive plant issues, a reception at the U.S. Botanic Garden, and special poster displays and exhibits to raise awareness about invasive plant issues. Presentations and Position Papers will highlight significant weed management and ecosystem restoration topics. Seeking TNC Mentor for Smith Fellow (Nationwide, USA) From: Ryan Keane (ryan.keane(at)ic.ac.uk) I am a recent PhD graduate, planning to submit a project proposal for the TNC Smith Postdoctoral Fellowship, titled: "Do generalist herbivores facilitate exotic plant invasion? A test of the Enemy Release Hypothesis with Alliaria petiolata." I am contacting you to learn: --if there are any TNC staff with work related to the proposed project that would be interested in serving as a mentor? --what aspects could be added to the proposal to integrate it better with TNC research needs? --if there are any TNC preserves with permanent deer exclosures for inclusion in the proposed natural experimental work, especially any infested with garlic mustard? Any advice or information you can provide, or forwarding this message to potentially interested staff, would be greatly appreciated. Upcoming meetings (Nationwide, USA) From: Barry Rice (barrymr(at)ucdavis.edu) **Southeast EPPC Annual Meeting/Lexington, Kentucky 15-17 May The meeting, hosted by the Kentucky EPPC (Exotic Pest Plant Council) Chapter, will feature continuous presentations on pest plant topics and field trips on pest problems to view and discuss some local problems. A workshop on herbicide application for private landowners is also planned. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about an important national issue at a local level. And, how often do you get to go to a meeting with "exotic" in the title? Cost: $85, which includes a dinner reception. Colorado's Banned list---a correction (Colorado, USA) From: Eric Lane (Eric.Lane(at)ag.state.co.us) Regarding message #2 in the last invasive species digest...The Denver Post got its facts wrong---here in Colorado we just added 19 species to the list of species we ban from sale as nursery stock. This brings the total number of species we presently ban to 78, 18 of which are generally recognized as ornamental species. We got a lot of press coverage but it wasn't always accurate.
