Question on Dioscorea batatas From: Peter Whan (pwhan(at)bright.net) Has anyone else noticed Dioscorea batatas (cinnamon vine) as a problem, and, if so, does anyone know how to control it? We have just noticed it beginning to be a nasty invader and have not had much luck with Roundup. Any ideas? --------------------------------------- 2. More advice on water hyacinth control From: Steve Morrison (smorrison(at)ithink.net) Some years ago at Tiger Creek Preserve in central Fla., we hand removed 2 small infestations of water hyacinth from a creek using volunteers. It was very successful, but required repeated follow up effort (seems like no matter what you use, it requires that...). Harmon (pharmon(at)dnr.state.wv.us) The WV Nongame Wildlife and Natural Heritage Program has a color, general interest brochure entitled Invasive Plants in West Virginia, and approximately 35 information flyers on species of trees and shrubs suitable for planting in West Virginia that support wildlife and are good alternatives to some of the more problematic invasive woody species. All of these documents are available the address given below, or by email request from asfameni(at)dnr.state.wv.us. Also available through the West Virginia Native Plant Society is a Checklist of Invasive Plants of West Virginia. This document was developed by about a dozen botanists (including me) from West Virginia and surrounding states who are familiar with invasive threats in the state.
